Style yourself on a tight budget

Being a teenager and a high school student with all the homework, tests, essays, and at the same time trying to find yourself and your identity is a big challenge. Trying to find time for everything can be hard, but balance is important. Just like it’s important to study, it’s also important to go out to parties, hang out with friends, go on dates, concerts, etc. Putting together different outfits for these events can be a struggle. We have a lot of influences from commercials, social media, and celebrities – plus we want to look good without spending a lot of money. Here are some tips that have helped me that will hopefully be just as useful to you.

First tip: Accessorize – make it look like you put a lot of thought into your outfit. Put on a nice pair of earrings or a necklace and you are good to go. It doesn’t matter if the earrings only cost you 30 kr. You can find different cheap accessories at H&M, Glitter, Bikbok, and Gina Tricot.

There are so many options out there. You don’t have to buy expensive jewellery to look good. For example, watches! Watches are always a great accessory – they make you look smart. It’s also a great present to request for your birthday.

At H&M there are a pack of ten rings that only cost 79.90 kr.

If you don’t like hoop earrings, then small stud earrings with fake diamonds will look really cute and classy. You can get them for a good price as well.

Second tip: Think before you buy. Ask yourself this question:

How would I style it or do I have something at home that will match with this?

Otherwise, when you come home with the item and it doesn’t look good with anything in your wardrobe, you’ll probably end up not using it.  Try to buy basic items that match with everything. One example is a nice cozy sweater. You could wear it with regular jeans and some sneakers, add some jewellery and you are good to go. At the same time you can also wear that same sweater with a skirt and stockings.

We students have the benefit of having a student card where we can get discounts in different boutiques and shops – use it!

Third tip: “Sales are your best friend”.

Sales are great for finding exclusive clothes at a lower price. The website Nelly.com is great for finding items for a cheaper price. Otherwise, sales are the perfect place to find both unique clothing and accessories. A good tip is to take a picture of the item that you want to buy and then wait until it goes on sale! You’ll need some patience, but at the end it is worth waiting when you save some extra cash on it.

Fourth tip: Shopping online. Tricks for shopping online are:

  • Don’t buy things that don’t look good on the model. The brand will try to make all of the photos look perfect on the website and if a dress, for example, still doesn’t look good, then it probably doesn’t look good on anyone.
  • Sign up for different websites to get discounts and newsletters. On certain websites you can get a discount if you sign up, you’ll get an email every time they have a sale or different deals.
  • If you’re into brands, Ebay is a great website to find different duplicates of expensive brands.

Fifth tip: “Simple is better than too much!” Wearing a nice black dress with some nice shoes and accessories looks very uniform, but at the same time you don’t have to spend  so much money.

Last tip: Find things that look similar or alike.

There’s nothing worse than having an expensive taste but being on a low budget! Here we have an outfit that costs a lot of money. Not everyone can afford buying a Gucci bag and a shirt, however, there are bags and shirts that look similar. Here we have two red bags, one of which is from Gucci.

The other red bag is from Boohoo.com. It looks similar to the Gucci bag, but the big difference is that this bag costs 120 kr whereas the Gucci bag costs 12,500 kr.

Here’s a t-shirt that looks like a Gucci shirt. This t-shirt is from Bikbok and it only costs 199 kr instead of 5,900 kr. So instead of spending 18,400 kr you only spend 319 kr and you’ll still look just as good!

One of the best tips is to find style inspirations on Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr. When you find something you like, but it’s not within your budget, you just go to your favorite shop and find something that looks similar. Many shops like H&M and Zara like to copy high-end brands.

Now you know that you don’t need a lot of money to create your own style. Be unique – don’t be afraid of trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone. Fashion is a way of expressing yourself and money should not prevent you from doing it. “Life isn’t perfect, but your outfit can be,”

  1. I love the fact that you suggested websites to use or stores to check out if you, for example, want to find good dupes that have good quality.

  2. This post is dangerous; I want them all! The key is to do a serious inventory before running off and buying new things. It would be great if someone could arrange a garage-sale or something similar. Perhaps someone else can enjoy clothes or accessories I am about to throw away. I would rather see someone else enjoy it than me trashing something perfectly functional.
